The spectacled bear (Tremarctos ornatus) is an iconic species of the tropical Andes. Spectacled bear habitat loss and fragmentation are major threats, and since that trend is increasing, it is imperative to establish measures to reduce and mitigate their effects. The implementation of conservation strategies are a challenge for this species because information is lacking, beginning with knowledge of distribution and population estimates. This project aims to develop distribution models and analyze the effects of the changing landscape on spectacled bear’s habitats. We will generate inputs that contribute in the implementation of strategies and policies for the conservation of the spectacled bear in Peru.
