Factors affecting the distribution of jaguars and their prey in the humid northeast forests of Costa Rica

Camera traps will be used in the humid northeast forests of Costa Rica to estimate the distribution and relative abundance of, and the factors affecting, jaguars (Panthera onca) and their prey. The anthropogenic factors and differences in prey presence/availability differ significantly from other jaguar study sites in Costa Rica, and I anticipate gaining new insights related to jaguar ecology and conservation. The study area includes three different management categories (national park, indigenous reserve and forest reserve), along with major variation in topography and seasonal weather. I will also study jaguar/livestock conflicts here and in other areas to better plan for jaguar management in the future.
