Four members of the Sustainable UMass team were honored for their work Oct. 20 as the Patrick administration presented its Leading by Example Awards during ceremonies at the State House.

Ezra Small, Rachel Dutton, Victoria Rosen and Craig Nicolson were recognized for their campus-wide sustainability work, which is recognized as one of the leading programs in the country. The group focuses on multiple aspects of sustainability, including supporting clean energy installations on campus, increased recycling, LED light bulb proliferation, and other campus-oriented activities.

Small is the campus sustainability manager and Dutton is the sustainability manager for Auxiliary Services. Rosen is sustainability communications and marketing manager with University Relations and Nicolson, a faculty member in environmental conservation, is director of academic sustainability programs.

Secretary of Energy and Environmental Affairs Maeve Bartlett and Secretary of Administration and Finance Glen Shor presided at the awards presentation, which highlighted an estimated $93 million in saved energy costs and other progress on Gov. Deval Patrick’s executive order to reduce state government energy consumption.

Also receiving awards were Bristol Community College, UMass Dartmouth, the city of Newburyport, the town of Dartmouth, the Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority, the Division of Capital Asset Management and Maintenance and Leverett’s town administrator.
