Stability and the Environment: Why It Matters to the US Military

Amy Krakowka Richmond, United States Military Academy West Point

This talk will focus on the relationship between regional stability and environmental factors.  Recent events have demonstrated a connection between environmental stress and conflict because these stresses intensify latent ethnic and political fissures, thus undermining security. Evidence suggests that this trend will persist because environmental change will continue to stress fragile environments in places with inherently weak governance. This dilemma is aggravated by non-sustainable  environmental practices, migration, and resource shortages.
