The University of Massachusetts - Amherst Department of Natural Resources Conservation (NRC) and the USDA Forest Service Northern Research Station (NRS) has awarded Dr. Justin A. Compton a two-year post-doctoral fellowship in sustainable forest management (SFM). The aim of the SFM Fellowship is to conduct innovative research in forest conservation in the northeastern U.S. Dr. Compton will collaborate with Dr. Stephen DeStefano, Unit Leader for the USGS Massachusetts Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Unit, to examine the impacts of moose in southern New England on forest structure, composition, regeneration, and sustainability. This research will be a collaborative effort involving federal, state, and local management agencies. In addition to Dr. Compton's research efforts, he will be conducting courses in the spring semesters. Justin comes to UMass-Amherst from The Pennsylvania State University where he completed his dissertation in Wildlife & Fisheries Sciences....

The Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI) has selected Amy Nathanson as a Student Assistant for the 27th Annual ESRI International User Conference, June 18 - 22,  in San Diego, California. Nathanson, a masters candidate in the UMass-Amherst Natural Resources Conservation Forest Resources program, was one of 60 students selected from a pool of 300 applicants to receive a full conference registration package, hotel accommodations, and meal stipend. The ESRI User Conference is the largest in the world devoted to geographic information system (GIS) technology.  Over 14,000 people from more than 120 countries will attend this conference to learn new skills, share information and learn new tips and tricks on managing, manipulating and analyzing geographic spatial data and databases. Nathanson works with Professor David Kittredge studying patterns of forest change across Massachusetts.  ...

Every year graduating seniors complete an exit survey about their satisfaction with their educational experience at UMass Amherst. Across not one, but three years of graduating classes, 82% of students majoring in Building Materials, Forestry, Wildlife and Fisheries Conservation, and Natural Resource Studies reported being very satisfied overall with their experience in their major – NRC ranked 3rd out of 52 departments on campus. When accounting for the other components of the survey – questions on satisfaction related to quality of teaching, faculty accessibility, academic advising, faculty concern for student progress, and writing preparation – NRC moved up to 2nd place in the department rankings for the entire university.
