Department Alumnus, John Organ Selected as Chief, USGS Cooperative Research Units

Anne Kinsinger, USGS Associate Director for Ecosystems, announced today that John Organ will be the new Chief of the Cooperative Research Units: I'm delighted to announce that we have selected John Organ as Chief, USGS Cooperative Research Units. John comes to us with a wealth of great experience from the Fish and Wildlife Service and impressed me most with his passion and vision for the Cooperative Research Units. John has been Chief of Wildlife and Sport Fish Restoration for the Northeast Region of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service since 2005, and has worked in the FWS's Ecological Services and National Wildlife Refuge programs during his 35-year career. He is also an Adjunct Associate Professor of Wildlife Conservation at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, Michigan State University, and Andres Bello University in Santiago, Chile. 3-Time International Tree Climbing Champion Addresses MA Tree Wardens

Amherst, MA – On July 22, 2014, renowned arborist and international tree climbing champion Mark Chisholm addressed a capacity crowd of 40 municipal arborists as part of the Massachusetts Tree Wardens’ and Foresters’ Association summer ‘Professional Development Series’ (PDS). The theme of this PDS related to safe work practices, with emphasis on the use of specialized urban forestry equipment like bucket trucks and cranes.  “I’ve been a practicing arborist for many years and I want to continue to be active for many years to come” said Chisholm, “specialized urban forestry equipment needs to be maintained and used in accordance with its limitations and when we as users become careless, preventable accidents happen.”  Joining Chisholm on the agenda were Calvin Layton, Systems Arborist for Western Mass Electric Company and Bill Mitchell, Northeast Sales Representative for Forestry Equipment of Virginia.
