Primary interests

Dr. Nelson’s research interests are population biology, ecology and dynamics of teleost and elasmobranch fishes, designing effective surveys for the estimation of animal abundance, and stock assessment modeling.  He is the representative of  Massachusetts to the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission for the striped bass, and is currently the chair of the stock assessment committee.

Current Projects

  • Striped bass temperature preferences during their summer residence in coastal waters of Massachusetts
  • Cluster sampling: a pervasive, yet little recognized sampling design in fisheries research
